Ask Ray

Got a question for adventure runner and iRun runner-in-chief Ray Zahab? Send it to askray@irunnation.com.

How many pairs of shoes do you go through in a year?

Lots! Probably 15 pairs or so, depending on mileage. For expeditions I use more, especially if I'm running in sand or on a rough trail. In the Sahara Desert, I went through 20 pairs in total - about one pair a week.

When you ran across the Sahara Desert, where is the weirdest place you found sand?

Inside a sealed water bottle. I don't know how it got in there, but it's a crazy thing.

Do you really train with a tire behind you sometimes? What's up with that?

Yes! It's for resistance. I tie it around my waist with a climbing harness and then I drag it down the road. I'm working with gravity. It actually helps with running in the sand and up and down mountains. Think of it as sport-specific cross-training.

What's the maximum amount of mileage I should add to my long run from one week to the next?

"They" say something like 10 per cent. But I believe if you listen to your body, you can make increases to your mileage that are greater than that. You can go a little bit more, just be sensible and know when to back off.
