Top 10 Signs That You May Have Hit the Wall

by Tim Scapillato

  1. You keep looking down at your shoes and imagining how good they would taste with a little bit of vinegar and salt on them.
  2. You keep checking the calendar on your watch to figure out how long you have been running.
  3. You start to curse your (non-running) spouse for not being able to convince you that drinking beer and smoking cigarettes is much better for you than running marathons.
  4. You notice that the clear gel that was just handed to you on the end of a Popsicle stick tastes just like petroleum jelly. You turn around and go back for seconds.
  5. You decide that now is the time to shift into "ten-and-one" mode: Ten minutes of walking and one minute of weeping.
  6. You realize that the runner you thought you'd been drafting behind is actually an oak tree.
  7. It suddenly occurs to you that the race organizers made a serious error when measuring the course-they made it 42 MILES long instead of 42 KILOMETRES. You plan to ask for a refund.
  8. You wonder if there is another species of ANYTHING on the planet that would deliberately engage in such self-destructive, self-imposed discomfort. You keep picturing lemmings.
  9. You start hearing voices in your head. One says, "I'm going to train harder so this doesn't happen during the next marathon." Another voice says, "Next marathon?! What NEXT marathon!!??"
  10. You'd love to reach out and do something unspeakable to that so-and-so on the sidewalk who is yelling "you're looking good, you're almost there!" You don't, you aren't, and you both know it.
