Web Extra: Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Are you getting enough? Are You Eating Your Omega-3s?: Sports nutritionist Beth Mansfield gives iRunNation the lowdown on fatty acidsOmega-3 fatty acids are essential for general health, heart health, normal growth and development. For runners, omega-3 fats are even more important, since research suggests they may reduce inflammation and help to reduce recovery time after a tough training session or competition. But not all omega-3 fats are created equal. The most readily-available and beneficial forms of omega-3 fats are eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and docosahexaenoic (DHA), found in the oil of fatty fish such as salmon, white tuna, mackerel, rainbow trout, herring, halibut and sardines. Alpha-linolenic (ALA) acid, the precursor or "parent" to the longer chain forms of omega-3 (DHA and EPA), is found in flaxseed, hempseed, canola, soya, walnuts and green plants. ALA has to be converted into DHA/EPA by metabolic reactions in your body in order to be useful. Sports dietitians will often recommend that healthy adult runners eat at least two servings of fish per week to boost their omega-3 fatty acid intake. Yet, despite this recommendation, many Canadian runners likely do not get enough omega-3's. The good news is that nutritional scientists have been working hard to find other ways to get these omega-3 fats into foods that we like. Microencapsulated fish oils, rich in omega-3 fatty acids, have recently been approved for use in over 50 foods here in Canada. For starters, check out the fruit juice and yogurt sections in your grocery store for a taste of these new "fishy" foods. Omega-3 fats can also be added to some foods naturally. Dairy cows fed a specially-formulated feed with fish meal produce a DHA-rich milk (for more information, visit: www.dairy-oh.com), and chickens fed ground or milled flax as part of their regular diet produce an egg yolk with a higher amount of omega-3 in the form of DHA (for more information, visit: www.burnbraefarms.com). |
